Ancient Humans

Cavemen Had Bigger Brains Than Us. Nobody Told Me.

· 9:28

Were ancient humans smarter than us? I went in certain the answer was no. The grunting caveman dragging a club is one of the most famous pictures in the world - and it is almost completely made up.

Their brains were the same size as yours, and often bigger - scientists have measured hundreds of ancient skulls to work that out. When neuroscientist Dietrich Stout put modern people in a brain scanner while they learned to knap stone tools, the regions we use for language lit up: making a single cutting blade was as cognitively demanding as learning to speak. They crossed open ocean to reach Australia around 60,000 years ago, with no maps and no metal. They painted cave art with real shading and perspective 30,000 years ago. And they stored knowledge so well that Aboriginal oral histories still describe coastlines the sea swallowed more than 10,000 years ago.

Then the video turns the mirror around. You do not know your best friend’s phone number. You cannot get home without the little blue dot. Scientists call it cognitive offloading - we handed our memory, our navigation and our facts to machines. Same brain. Different tools. Your ancestors were not the primitive ones in this story - and by the end you might owe them an apology too.

Questions people ask

Were ancient humans smarter than modern humans?

Their brains were the same size as ours, and often bigger — that comes from measurements of hundreds of ancient skulls. What changed isn't the hardware, it's the tools: they kept knowledge in their heads and landscapes, we hand ours to devices.

What is cognitive offloading?

It's outsourcing your memory, navigation and facts to machines — the reason you can't recall your best friend's phone number or get home without the blue dot. Same brain as your ancestors, different tools.

How did ancient humans reach Australia without maps?

They crossed open ocean around 65,000 years ago, with no maps and no metal — evidence published by Clarkson and colleagues in Nature in 2017.
