Fatherhood
I Became a Dad and Felt Lost. Here's Why.
· 11:39
The day my son was born, my wife sent me the first photo and I went down on my knees, crying. I had never felt happiness like it. Three weeks later I stood in my kitchen at 3am, holding him, and felt completely lost. And I told nobody.
This is the video I wish someone had made for me. What actually happens to a father’s body in those first months, why the famous instant bond often arrives late and why that is normal, and the thing about one in ten new dads go through that almost never gets named.
Then, at the end, the two thoughts that genuinely pulled me out of it. Those are not from a study. They are from my own kitchen.

Questions people ask
Is it normal to feel lost or numb after becoming a father?
Yes, and it is more common than most men are told. Roughly one in ten new fathers experiences depression in the first year according to a JAMA meta-analysis of 43 studies, and low mood in men more often looks like anger, irritability and withdrawal than sadness. If it lasts more than two weeks, it is worth talking to a professional.
Does testosterone really drop when you become a dad?
In the largest longitudinal study, which followed 624 men for four and a half years, men who became hands-on fathers saw evening testosterone fall by a median of about a third, far beyond normal ageing. The more hands-on the father, the bigger the drop. Later meta-analyses confirm the direction but suggest a smaller average effect.
Why does the bond with a baby take longer for fathers?
A mother gets nine months of hormonal preparation. A father's bonding chemistry is triggered by contact instead: fathers' oxytocin levels match mothers', but rise with play and hands-on care rather than gestation. The bond is built through the hours, not issued at birth.
What helps a new dad most in the first months?
Skin-to-skin contact, taking the full parental leave available, owning one repeatable caregiving job, and keeping one honest connection outside the house. All four have research behind them, and none of them require you to be a natural at it.
